Contrasts

Life and ministry here in West Africa can be full of contrasts. As I was praying recently, the Lord reminded me of some of these contrasts and the daily blessings and challenges He works through.

It is easy and hard living here. There are always people willing to jump in and help to make daily tasks easier and labor is very inexpensive. The climate and environment are harsh, physically draining and difficult.

It can be crowded and lonely at the same time. West African culture is all about community and there are always people around. However, this is a very different culture with very few teammates or national believers around and yes, sometimes I feel a bit isolated or lonely even in the crowd.

There is great darkness and great light. Spiritually there is a lot of darkness with very little light of Christ. But, when that light of Christ glimmers in the darkness it shines far and bright.

Different is a word I encourage visitors to embrace and these contrasts show some of the differences in life here. Recently, our team in The Gambia had the privilege of hosting a team from West Cabarrus Church (my amazing sending church) they truly embraced all the differences here and were a great encouragement through times of prayer and fellowship. Thank you West Cabarrus!

  1. I chatted with them a little when I picked them up from the airport and am looking forward to hearing more of their trip to the Gambia! They all were blessed just being with you and assisting in the ways they were able. You are being prayed for often for God’s guidance and protection!! We Love You!!
