For those of you that have known me for a while you are well aware that I have negative handyman skills; I am really good at breaking things! However, when you live on a large several acre compound in rural West Africa, most buildings on that compound are 30-40 years old, the climate is very harsh, aggressive African termites (did you know they can eat cement) abound and there are only two of you living there someone has to oversee the repairs and maintenance. Don’t worry, my main role is negotiating and handing out the payments which I am pretty good at. Praise God for lots of helpers.
Now that the rainy season has wrapped up and the adult literacy class trainings have finished it is time to put major effort into construction projects and other repairs around our residential facility. We need to be all finished before the rains come again and this is West Africa so we are prepared for and anticipating plenty of WAWA moments and delays.
The other work does not stop when it comes to construction season; I just add another hat to the ones I already wear. And, if anything the ministry opportunities increase because we have interactions with all of the construction workers. Have you ever thought of the amazing ministry opportunities through construction, maintenance, carpentry or other skills that you may already have? There are young men here that are looking for new opportunities and you could be the one that teaches them a new skill while sharing with them the greatest opportunity of all, a relationship with Christ. If you are interested in finding out more about how the Lord may want to use you in The Gambia in these ways or others, please email or message me.
